SINGLESTREAM – FASHION INDUSTRY WITH A DIFFERENT MIND
I have been involved in the fashion industry for about a decade now and even when I first started working in the field, I was grappling with what the fashion industry represented and my own values. I love creating clothing, I am still so energized when I see a beautiful aesthetic, I get inspired when I see a clever design, and hence, I know that I can’t help myself but to do what I do – make fashion. But I also felt uneasy knowing that to most people fashion is seen as a cut throat industry that espouses vanity. Its an industry known to be snarky, snobbish, exclusionary, elitist, competitive and self important. It’s also one of the most polluting industries that often puts profit ahead of ethics. Therefore I knew if I was going to continue to create fashion, I had to do it differently.
Last year I met Kathryn Hilderbrand of Green Line by K. During our first encounter, we realized we saw eye to eye regarding many fashion industry practices. Both of us wanted to be part of a different side of fashion. We are both now part of a growing trend of eco fashion. Naturally we started to work together, discuss our ideas and realized we wanted to show how eco fashion is different. I was determined to show that eco fashion does not have a specific aesthetic as is a common misconception. Being ethical does not really have that many limits to creating the look you want. Kathryn and I decided to create SINGLESTREAM to show that eco fashion is not about a different aesthetic but about a different attitude. We want to show that the fashion industry doesn’t have to be cut throat, elitist or competitive and driven by profits. Eco fashion focuses on craftsmanship, fairness, cooperation, and collaboration. It is inclusive rather than elitist. Our project SINGLESTREAM demonstrates precisely those concepts. We are two creators collaborating on a collection that is unique to each of us yet each piece is created to be mixed with another. All the fabrics are ethically sourced and hand made to order by one of us. It is made to showcase the possibilities of fashion that is at its core ethical and eco friendly.

We named each piece we created after names of subway stations on the green lines of our respective cities. It is the common thread that we wanted to share, Kathryn being from the Boston area and I from Montreal. The two “green lines” coming together on this journey yet representing each unique city. We are truly excited to keep this project going and hope that it will be contagious and spread to other cities and inspire other designers to collaborate and create a myriad of ‘green’ fashion aesthetics.

SINGLESTREAM – The Concept
In early 2014 I had the pleasure of meeting Kathryn Hilderbrand of Green Line by K.
Kathryn and I are both designers of eco fashion. We have come together because we believe that eco fashion is not about a specific aesthetic, but rather an attitude. Coming from two different backgrounds – me, a Lithuanian Canadian, and Kathryn, a well-travelled American living on Cape Cod – we have very different styles of design. My label, Devinto, is inspired by the dark 60’s vintage urban vixen. Kathryn’s label, GreenLinebyK, caters to the modern bohemian woman, a style inspired by the refined yet wild and free woman of the 70’s. And yet we admire and appreciate each other’s work and relate to the struggles of being an independent eco designer.

SINGLE STREAM is a collaborative effort we’ve embarked upon with a specific purpose – to demonstrate through design that eco fashion is no different from mainstream fashion when it comes to its possibilities. It can be many different things, many different looks, and many different styles.
The primary difference between eco fashion and mainstream fashion is their focus. Eco fashion is focused on ethical principles and environmentally conscious sourcing; craftsmanship and community rather than profit margins. It is about collaboration rather than competition. It is inclusive rather than exclusive.
With this in mind, our goal is to design garments representative of our own personal aesthetics and pair them, with these combinations representing the community of eco fashion we aim to promote. We want to unite our styles in a SINGLE STREAM – as friends, colleagues, and members of this new fashion community.
It is our hope that this community will grow, vast and strong – not only between fellow designers and garment producers, but extending to consumers, our customers, and everyone interested in knowing where and how their clothing is made.
